Latest News lockdown blues drawing to a close?April/May 2021

Dear All,
Can we believe it, a year has passed since our last Newsletter..as we all find ways to manage our time and our space and our struggles in this weird world..This story of cansurviving was set free many years ago now, for people hungry to find different ways to heal.. There is the fear of diagnosis, there is the fear of treatment..and if we focus on these fears we forget to shine the little light we possess on the body's own ability to heal..so the CS team do hope that by thinking about the body, the mind and the spirit, all together not as separate modalities, you've found things to do, to follow up, to make your life purposeful, rather than remain driving along in the fog as I was doing when I was first diagnosed in 2012. Let's help others too turn to this as the first rather than the last resort..and as a shining example of improving wellness you could turn to ANITA MOORJANI..she has been 15 years well since having been told she was dying of lymphatic cancer..she had a near death experience (as I did myself) and wrote a book DYING TO LIVE..she is not one of these shouty I cured myself people, (and yes they do have things to shout about) but modest and wishing to help fellow human beings along the road..give her a whirl. Of course there remains little funding for these modalities which cure in a benign way, but just carry on carrying on. There is uncertainty all around as Covid still is an issue, and you may know people who have died, but juicing and joy and acknowledging our oneness as well as our uniqueness is a good enough way forward...
With love from the CS Team

Thriving after cancer diagnosis

Is this a possibility? Having a cancer diagnosis is a shocking thing and many people suffer from the shock as well as the disease. And then of course we have had Covid 19 to deal with..so many unanswerable questions.. I wrote a Thought Piece for Mind in Mind, which is worth a look..
‘The Impact of Covid 19 on children’s mental health, before, during and after the pandemic’ Uncertainty, Judith Edwards argues, is hard for anyone. Yet if we want to protect children’s mental health, they need parents and teachers who can contain their anxieties and mental health professionals who can bear with not knowing the outcome of this pandemic’.
The shock and fear play their part in worsening the condition, both of a cancer diagnosis and the pandemic, and while this idea is opposed by many who wish to say that classic ‘normal’ treatments for cancer are the only way forward, it is worth holding in the mind. As Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) said ..’All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, Second it is violently opposed, third it is accepted as being self evident.’ People who have been with us for some time may have read some of this before, but there are nuggets tucked in between...so please keep reading. It may be new to many…

I want to start with a story. Four guys were navigating the turbulent confluence of three rivers in a small boat. There was water everywhere. The engine spluttered and died. Then what happened? One guy prayed. One guy sat back and thought ok this is it. One drank. And number four fixed the engine. We’re all in the same boat..let’s fix the engine?

The site http://www.cansurviving.com was set up after a cancer diagnosis, where the recipient of the bad news felt for a time that diagnosis equated with imminent death. The site then grew, and many people contributed to this growth, so it had a burgeoning list of topics which grew as more contributions came in. Clearly many people all over the world, from as far away as China and Russia, were interested in this subject, introduced by someone in London UK. So the site has been set up to help anyone post-diagnosis to explore alternative OR complementary treatments to aid the healing process. It was called ‘a life jacket’ for people, and Dr Henry from Australia said ‘it seems to take a surprisingly long time to recover one’s basic security after these events’. While ‘looking outside the box’ has become a cliché, it wasn’t when the site was started and a song was written for the site by J.P.Kallio called’ Take a Look Outside the Box’. The site founder wrote several papers which were published online: Cancer Healing and Containment - Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy https://nessapublishers.com/articles/28 ... 0NJCST.pdf
Cancer Healing: Holding the Space and Neurobiological Research - EC PSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHIATRY https://www.ecronicon.com/ecpp/pdf/ECPP-07-00267.pdf
Cancer Healing, Groups and Gaslighting - Journal of Mental Health & Clinical Psychologyhttp://www.mentalhealthjourna ... hting.html
Cancer healing, losing and finding the plot - Open Access Text https://www.oatext.com/pdf/ICM-2-120.pdf
Cancer: Survivorship and Sailing On - International Journal of Science and Research Methodology http://ijsrm.humanjournals.com/wp-conte ... dwards.pdf
Cancer Healing and the importance of Narrative - Yes to Life

And while Covid 19 definitely had its downsides, many people used the time to access the site, which not only has tips for cansurvivors and thrivers, but also is the way forward for many people to live healthier, more vibrant lives. During social isolation when treatments for cancer were postponed, this site has really proved a lifeline for those suffering from depression and desperation. The topics range from Diet ( a huge number of posts here) to Library with reviews, Creativity after Diagnosis, Will you or Won’t You (about the fact that we all inevitably die) and Let it Be (about depression- almost inevitable). Latest News is another topic, and Personal Stories. It is important not to have a fight about this: chemotherapy is known to have difficult side effects including advanced weakness and death, and there are no miracle cures out there. Even this week the Saturday Times (30 October, 2021, p 12 Body and Soul) talks of someone who has survived a number of diagnoses: ‘the irony is that it’s the subsequent consequences of the cancer treatments that nearly killed Pandora, rather than the cancer itself’. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/frie ... -kq6hnm3kv Many people, rather than submit themselves to ‘cut, poison and burn’ would prefer to try other ways, even when their family just wish to magic the condition away with standard protocols. There are many sites which proclaim to have ‘The Answer to Cancer’: but it is multi-faceted, as we demonstrate on the site, and as our respected researcher Teleny said: ‘I’ve learned to mistrust these types of approach. By the time one has waded through the verbiage, one is invariably presented with an offer to buy a dubious product - dubious because its ingredients are rarely evidence-based.’

The site founder is now over 10 years away from diagnosis, feeling healthy and strong, and her role model is now nearly fifteen years from being told to go home and make his will. So let’s not fight, but let’s cooperate, let’s not deny, let’s make room for new ways of approaching what is the bogeyman of our age, the emperor of all maladies as it has been called (see the site Library section for a review of this book) .On cansurviving.com, we send out Newsletters twice a year . I spoke in the last Newsletter about “Community”, that friend power is more impactful than willpower, as we have found as the site grows, the people posting enlarges, ( as well as Teleny, Charles Southgate and Andrew Baldwin have recently posted) and our hits increase throughout the world. Recently we discovered this 1975 link when the incomparable Alison Steadman acted the role of a breast cancer ‘victim’ as they were then called.. http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/1086102/
Fostering strong friendships and having a supportive community provides numerous health benefits; we have seen and research shows that those with strong social ties have a decreased incidence of disease and reduced mortality rates. Indeed it has now been shown that people in hospices with supportive teams survive longer than those who are still ‘fighting’ to be well in hospitals. We are wired to want connection and be part of a tribe. As we say, “It’s fairly important to choose a tribe who support rather than undermine you, as the best-meaning friends and family may do, by wanting you to go down the orthodox route with no exploration and no questions asked.. You need as we say to get back in the driving seat (fixing the engine in the boat) and walk your own walk. Embrace that instinct to be part of a supportive tribe by prioritizing your relationships with friends that elevate you, we suggest, the people who make you your best self. In the same regard, take the leap to break off toxic friendships that cause you guilt or anxiety; you’ll have more room for loving, supportive people in your life. As 19th c. Nietzsche said: ‘The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.’ Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) talks about escaping the conventional tribe: what we recommend on the site is finding your own tribe which gives you heart to continue on your way, without being dragged down by doubt and despair.”
