newsletter with pix I hope...

Hi dear All, Finally we have a Newsletter! It had pictures in it but they were not 'allowed' by the server- so I am trying again here--let's see--learning curves abound... no still no pix so I will add some anon...

Dear Cansurviving Community,

This is the first of our Newsletters to you all. As of this week we are 218 members strong with 253 Twitter followers (@ju_cansurviving)- and growing- we get upwards of 16K hits a month, so many thanks to you all for passing the link on to others. Our Facebook Cansurviving page too continues to spread the word.

We want to keep you in the loop with what we did last year, in case you missed reading about it on the site, and what we plan for this year.

All of your suggestions are most welcome, so please let us know what more we can do.

And with that in mind, it would be helpful if each of you could let us know how you came to hear of the site, so that we can target our efforts this year in a way which is most helpful to more people.

On a recent Desert Island Discs Mark Rylance (now aka Thomas Cromwell) told a story about how he chose theatre over film by consulting the ancient Chinese book of Wisdom the I Ching—the word ‘community’ came up for him- and for us too this is the way forward, this is what we are building, a community of cansurvivors who feel supported by our growing numbers of members. This is what we all need. It is a solution to the problem of feeling alone- as you tend to do however much treatment you have had, after it has finished and you have been ‘discharged’.

An educated mind is a mind that makes better choices…

This is what a recent new member said, after being faced with the trauma of cancer diagnosis.:
“Thank you very much for the information and I appreciate you for taking time and responding to my email...this site is so inspiring. I'm taking it slow before making any further decisions about treatments. In the mean time I’m following the alkaline diet and reading a lot about success stories and different diet plans, as each body responds differently to each method either surgery, chemo or diet I believe... I already feel very relaxed and positive about beating this cancer without any side effects. I look forward to sharing my story on the forum in near future.”

This is what we aim for on the site: for it to be a place where people can feel part of a strong community who are all living vibrantly, amassing our knowledge base, and supporting one another by our efforts.

So what happened last year?
We had a very successful meeting at the Tabernacle in West London, made some new friends who are now members, and hope to follow this up with a more formal question and answer session some time this year at the same venue. Lorraine our Publicity Manager is looking into this and we will send you information later. Lorraine is organising CS bags to sell at the event too.

Then our Site Communications person Rose made a HUGE £1000 for Canceractive UK with her Midnight Sun Run in Norway on June 21st. Canceractive have used the money to further the messages they so helpfully send out to the world about what is the cutting edge news in the field. This wonderful woman plans a triathlon this year, all arranged for 30th May in London’s Hyde Park, and will give the money to the Leukaemia and Lymphatic Cancer charity - https://leukaemialymphomaresearch.org.uk/

We have joined up too with Yes to Life!, a cancer charity which funds people’s ‘alternative’ treatments ( yestolife.org.uk/ ) – what we might also call ‘traditional’ treatments. We hope to do more with them in 2015, and the director wants Judith to speak at a meeting in the autumn about children with cancer. They already flag us up on their site as another resource for people who are following the ‘traditional’ route.

And what is happening now?
Maggies Centres are also flagging up our site (this is a UK wide project: see https://www.maggiescentres.org/our-centres/ ) and Patricia our Scotland Representative will be liaising with the Scotland Maggies to see what we can do there.

We have also been in talks with a prestigious film director about a possible TV programme- this is still in the earliest stages but watch this space. And one of our Twitter musician followers is mulling over a cansurviving song!

Andrew
the Ideas Man continues to give us his excellent advice and ideas... keeps our feet on the ground too...

In the media frame, Judith did an hour’s interview with music dedications about the site on a local community radio station AvenuesRadio http://www.avenuesradio.com/

Here’s the link to the programme:
Avenues Radio - Cansurviving.com.mp3 There’s some great music on the show too and Toby is an ace interviewer… https://www.dropbox.com/s/taqa0fe9bj5uf ... m.mp3?dl=0

It would be great if any of you could contact your own local community radio station wherever you live in the world, and talk about the site --music dedications make this a treat too- it does need someone local to make the approach- you can access UK local radio stations here: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/radiolic ... y-main.htm Then you can fantasize, Desert Island Discs here we come!

Judith has now become a member of the CHART research project into the efficacy of alternative therapies for cancer, and she hopes that you will also contact Josh at CHART to do this (details on the Research Forum) - it’s another way we can be part of the growing wave of awareness that we can live with cancer rather than die of it, that we can each be a small drop in this wave which swells and will eventually break the apparent deadlock between ‘mainstream’ and ‘alternative’ therapies. Why be in a box until you die? No person on the planet will get out of this project called LIFE alive, but we can make sure what while we’re here we serve others and thus help ourselves to have more fulfilling lives.

So, dear members of http://www.cansurviving.com , our thanks to each and every one of you. By being part of this project you are holding up a light in the darkness of the world where the latest prediction is that 1 in 2 people will get cancer.

Three P words to end up with: please PASS ON, POST (maybe a restaurant near you, or a book you’d like others to know about?) and PERSEVERE, and of course keep on following us on Twitter and Facebook.

With our gratitude and love,

From the http://www.cansurviving.com team, Judith, Rose, Lorraine, Andrew and Patricia
