This Reith Lecture is truly amazing- for us all to hear, and to use to help ourselves and others, as we all approach this inevitable fact of life, however long we stay vibrantly alive- dying and death.

Dr Atul Gawande, surgeon and writer, suggests that we have to learn to cope with limits, ‘the problem of hubris’—‘we have no greater unfixables than ageing and death’ ..He suggests that doctors ask, and individuals, ask, a series of simple but penetrating questions-

‘what is your understanding of where you are with your illness?’ ‘What are your fears and worries?’ ‘’What are your goals?’

It is a moving lecture- do listen to it and share with others…it talks about among other things ‘chemo costs’ and he means these costs to the individual, not the public purse...….’If this were a drug it would be a multimillion pound drug’—this is ’about HAVING CONVERSATIONS'

Being Mortal: What Happens in the End

'Gawande has provided us with a moving and clear-eyed look at aging and death in our society, and at the harms we do in turning it into a medical problem, rather than a human one'.

If you know of anyone who could well be trying to manage their own feelings about babies with serious illness, do go onto the Association of Child Psychotherapists website-
http://www.childpsychotherapy.org.uk/
they have a leaflet for those who are indeed trying to have these conversations, as babies too need to have conversations...odd as that may at first seem --do pass this on
