Poem for the Day Book One

Postby Josefine » Sun Jan 24, 2016 11:07 pm

Poem for the Day One (1994) edited by Nicholas Albery with a foreword by Wendy Cope.

This book has become a bestseller, the royalties of the book go to support the Natural Death Centre charity (http://www.naturaldeath.org.uk) which was founded by Nicholas and myself in April 1991. The idea of the book is to encourage people to learn a poem by heart every day. Nicholas loved poetry. Every poem chosen he learnt by heart. He included one of his own poems on 29 February, using the pseudonym Alan Beam.

"366 poems, one for each day of the year (including leap years). Chosen for their narrative, resonance and rhythm, these are poems to learn by heart or treasure and enjoy. Poets included range from Yeats, Shakespeare, Housman and Kipling, to contemporary poets such as Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy, Maya Angelou and Thom Gunn."

There is a little story attached to each poem about the poem or the poet in foot notes. The book also includes birthdays, death days and other bits of info on what happened on this day. A mine of information for poetry lovers. A former Archbishop of Canterbury kept the book at his kitchen table and read the poem for the day aloud at breakfast time.

During his research for the book Nicholas found that a notable number of poets had a parent die in childhood. Nicholas died in June 2001 in a car accident. He was 52.
