The Good News about Booze: Tony Edwards, (2013) Premium Publishing, London

Some of you (like me) may have foresworn the Demon Drink, and feel OK about that—but this is definitely a book to read if you’re feeling ambivalent about it and would like to hear the good news about drink and cancer- (as well as a whole lot of other dread diseases)—Engagingly and simply written (how about that for a book stuffed with scientific fact) the author’s aim to retrieve alcohol from the ‘naughty step’ is more than fulfilled.

As leading cancer specialist Prof. Sikora says in the foreword “Of course this book will be labelled as controversial, but its value is that it could lead to a much better understanding of all the complex issues involved. Here you have the data you need to help you make your own decision”--that last bit underlined by me since it is the watchword of this site. The science writer author has waded through a lot of high-quality medical research—which my goodness can be dull and riddled with scientific jargon—to save you the trouble. However, he provides all the references so you can check the original data for yourself. This is indeed high quality research since he’s been deeply involved in this field for years. And more good news for all on this site is that the author has very kindly agreed to keep supplying us with up to date cutting edge research on the Research Forum…

Do we overplay the perils of alcohol? Well there’s another book in the library section which calls cancer ‘a survival mechanism’ and makes a good case for that—so it’s wise to look twice at ‘received wisdom’ because it may just possibly be ‘received prejudice’—Read this book, pass it on, give it to your friends instead of a bottle when you next visit (!)—and I’ll just raise my glass of sparkling water with a small slice of lemon and say ‘cheers’!
