Although drinking alcohol is a risk factor for 'hormone-positive' breast cancers, it is not for 'hormone-negative' breast cancers. Indeed, two studies now show that alcohol can actually help prevent 'triple-negative' breast cancer - the most aggressive type of all. So, if a close relative had TNBC, you arguably ought to drink; that's the implication of the latest US study.
Here's a key extract:
In the present study, consumers of alcohol had a reduced risk of TNBC, which reached statistical significance in women with an intake of ≥7 drinks/week at baseline.Similar to our findings for TNBC, Trivers et al
reported reduced odds ratios for drinkers of <7 drinks/week (OR = 0.72))and >7 drinks/week (OR = 0.72).In three previous studies, alcohol intake was not associated with TNBC or basal-like breast cancer.
