The Freedom of Forgiveness

At the end of a long and productive life, Desmond Tutu from South Africa has published a book about this vital subject: The Book of Forgiving, (Harper Collins).

Forgiveness is central in healing and has been discovered to be central in the aftermath of cancer diagnosis- as Tutu says ‘the simple truth is, we all make mistakes, and we all need forgiveness’. We need to forgive ourselves (this is vital), forgive those who we feel have ‘wronged’ us, and often they really have, in order to move on. Tutu describes how as a helpless little boy he had to watch his father physically abuse his mother. However hard it is to struggle with forgiving those who have harmed us, he says ‘the only way to experience healing and peace is to forgive’. It’s not easy. Tutu describes how his father asked to speak to his son on the last night of his life. ‘Tomorrow’, said Tutu, and tomorrow his father was dead. Forgiveness of ourselves and others is a central idea in many religions, (ie in the Christian ‘Lords Prayer’). It’s something to work at, in order to cleanse our minds as we are aiming too to cleanse our bodies, so that cancer cannot thrive. This is the way towards truth, reconciliation, and harmony.

And here is another piece by the founder of The Forgiveness project...forgiveness can be 'life-enhancing' but it can also tear people apart...it is nevertheless a transformative and powerful route to healing..
