Energy Psychology - providing gentle assistance

Energy Psychology is a family of approaches that work with the mind and the body's energy system in combination. This provides a gentle yet powerful synergy that releases stress, clears dysfunctional patterns of thought and emotion, and helps to orient the mind and body towards healing.

It arose from work in the 1960s and 70s by George Goodheart, John Diamond and others who explored the interface of the body's energy meridian system and the mind and the physical body. By tapping or holding acupoints and other energy centres, stress is released - and by tuning the mind to particular thoughts and memories, the work is targeted on these.

Common versions of these methods include Emotional Freedom Techniques, Thought Field Therapy, Tapas Acupressure Technique, Healing from the Body Level Up, Advanced Integrative Therapy, and my own approach called Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy. We do not know fully why and how these methods work, although there are various theories, and some relevant research. What we do know is that these methods are indeed effective in relieving anxiety and stress - with many research studies, including randomised controlled trials.

Ways that energy psychology can help include:

Helping to reduce stress and maintain a state of calm
Relieving the shock of diagnosis
Relieving the fear of the future
Relieving the fear and stress of treatment
Reducing adverse reactions to treatment
Orienting the mind-body-energy system towards health and recovery
Identifying hidden resistances to recovery

Please note that energy psychology practitioners would never claim to be offering a treatment for cancer per se - but instead work to heal the energetic and emotional aspects of the condition. Energy Psychology is entirely compatible with conventional treatment.
